IS OUR SCHOOL REAPING US OFF WITH THIS 10 DAY EDUCATIONAL TRIP?

YOU ASKED

Our school is organizing a 10 days educational trip to Kenya in December. While the itinerary is very nice, the tour price at US$ 2100 is very expensive compared to other 10 days school group tours to Africa. Is the school reaping us off?

ANNE HUYSMAN REPLIES

Let's start with the positive on your educational trip to Kenya: the itinerary is good. Now on the price of the school tour - note there are many variables in determining the right price for an educational tour. Such variables are national parks visited, guides used, hotels/lodges used, safari vehicles and other overheads that naturally come with organizing a tour.

To this put the reliability of the school travel agency, a fact that is hard to put a price on because you might find some agencies that give below the market prices that leaves out crucial ground costs and others that charge high but with prices that are fully inclusive of most ground costs.

If a slightly higher prices for the school tour guarantees experience, safety and reliability it is worth paying. On the other hand if a low price (which might look attractive), leaves a lot of ground costs in Kenya to be paid as extra by the students, then your school would be better off taking more expensive tour if it is inclusive of most ground costs.
