How can we (family of 5 2 adults with 3 teenagers), get a low cost family vacation in Kenya?

We want a private safari, not in the top luxury safari camps but we neither want to be in seedy lodges that are far way from the places where the most animals are? We can only travel during July and August.

When planning private family safaris, cost is definitely a major consideration but you have to be careful that you don't go so low in price-cutting and compromise the quality of the tour. Booking the family safari directly with a Kenyan tour operator may reduce the total cost of the tour but you should do a through background check of the reliability or otherwise of the Kenya safari operator.

Tented safari camps are always more expensive than the traditional safari lodges but this does not in any way mean that the lodges are of poor quality; it is only that they cater for a larger number of people than the tented safari camps.

Booking your tour early can mean that you can negotiate with the operators before their books are full. Remember every dollar you save, is a worth save.

The vehicle you use will also matter. Kenya safaris by 4wd land-cruisers cost much more than by minibuses. Consider that as long as the vehicle is mechanically sound you can have quality safari.
