Best duration for a college trip to Africa

YOU ASKED

We are planning our college inaugural trip to Africa. How many days should a good trip take? We want to balance quality and price, what should we consider to get the right mix of wildlife viewing and cultural visits.

ANNE HUYSMAN REPLIES

The success of your college tour to Africa will depend on the research you put in the itinerary and the logistics that your ground operator will provide.

On the number of days needed, this will depend largely on what is "theme" of your itinerary. If you are going to Africa exclusively for wildlife viewing in one location e.g. Masai Mara, 4 days are enough.

However considering that the airfare is a fixed cost regardless of the number of days you commit to the safari, you get more value by staying longer and doing much more than just wildlife viewing.

Stretch your theme to culture, archeology, ornithology etc. Mix it all up with walking safaris, visits to local schools, markets or volunteering in community projects. This can easily stretch your college tour to Africa to 9-12 days.

Have in mind that distances between to safaris points are far off and roads are rough, so you need to allow more time for transfers and also for resting.
