Can we book wildebeest migration safari in Kenya on short notice?

YOU ASKED

Can we a wildebeest migration safari to Kenya on short notice? We want to get into Masai Mara right at the right time for wildebeest migration and we would there fore want to wait until we get information that the wildebeest are crossing the Mara river then we book out safari.

ANNE HUYSMAN REPLIES

Watching the wildebeest migration is Masai Mara is an experience worth coming to Kenya for and even with the best estimates of when it will start in each year the exact day is only know to nature. I can understand your wanting to time your arrival in Kenya to precisely coincide with when the wildebeests are crossing the river, an affair which lasts about 2 weeks. To the facts of booking a wildebeest migration safari, just like you many people are keen to be in Masai Mara during the migration period and lodges and tented camps are normally booked to capacity months in advance. So leaving your booking to the the very last day might mean that you may not have a lodge/camp to stay in or you may not get your preferred safari lodge/camp in Masai Mara.

Of course if you want to do basic camping on public camp sites you will always get a place to squeeze in but is this what you want for your migration safari?

Your best bet is to talk with your experienced safari operator and with his guidance, book your stay in Mara at the most likely time to see the wildebeest migration but leaving it too late may be to your advantage.
