High school students volunteering in a community program in Kenya

YOU ASKED

Are there programs for high school students wanting to do community work in Kenya? Do such programs include students trips to Masai Mara. We have 3 weeks of travel to Kenya and we would like to volunteer with a local community in Kenya for 2 weeks and then do safaris for 1 week. Would our volunteering work pay for the safari?

ANNE HUYSMAN REPLIES

It is a good idea to volunteer with a community during your student travel to Kenya. However volunteer programs have laid down procedures to ensure that the students and the community benefit from the program. With this the safari to Masai Mara is normally a bonus to but not the main reason of taking student volunteering program to Kenya.

Would your volunteering work pay for the safari? This is a firm no, you will instead pay a fees to join in the program. Since you are supposed to be helping a local community which in many ways are much worse off than you, it would be putting an enormous financial burden on them if they were to fund your safaris in Kenya.

Consider that most communities are nowadays cautious on directly taking students volunteers and they prefer to deal with established volunteer vacation providers to vet who joins the programs and on what terms.
