Is it safe for teens to travel to Africa alone?

YOU ASKED

I am teen attracted to the idea of traveling unaccompanied to Africa. At 17 years I've already toured several US states on minimal budget, and with the experience gained I now want to Africa for about 3 weeks. Would I be safe?

ANNE HUYSMAN REPLIES

While there is no limitation of where a determined 17 years old teenager can go, it helps to keep things in clear perspective especially in the areas of safety and access to ready help in case of any problem while on the journey.

True, Africa travel is much more easier to do than it was in the 20th century, but Africa remains an "out-of-comfort-zone" destination to many travelers. It has its challenges which despite the glossy images that come out of safaris, one would be too naive to ignore.

On the issue of safety, if you are arranging your African tour through a travel agency - whose bio you have counter checked to see that they are genuine and reliable and you have paid for the ground services e.g. hotels, transport: you would be keeping yourself on the safe side.

However if traveling independently and you plan to arrange things (hotels, transport) on the "spot", count on it it will be expensive, inconveniencing and you might be exposing yourself to real safety issues especially as your intention is to travel on budget to Africa.

Even with an extensive independent travel experience in USA, at 17 years you and your parents / guardians should have a thorough discussions on if you should travel to Africa independently and how you should handle any eventualities that may happen on your trip.
