Is parents' consent needed for college students educational safaris?

YOU ASKED

If a student has saved enough money to book a educational safari to Africa, can the college allow the student to book the tour without his parents consent?

ANNE HUYSMAN REPLIES

When a school is planning an educational safari to Africa or to any other destination, it must acknowledges that parents are interested parties in its out of school activities and can therefore not proceed to take the students out with out consent from parents.

The issue goes further than just payment for the educational trip - it is a legal requirement that the parent or approved guardian must sign a release form with the school - which acknowledges and confirms that though the school has done the its best in arranging the trip, in case of any eventuality the parent can't hold the school responsible.

It is also the school's duty to furnish the parents / guardian of students going on the eduactional trip, with as much information about the trip as possible. Parents should only sign the release form with full information not only about the destination but about on the ground logistics e.g. accommodation, ground operators, type of insurance available, number of teachers accompanying the group, etc.

You have done well to save for the eduactional safari but you must face your parents to get form consent for the trip.
