Meru National Park or Samburu Reserve

Which is better for bird watching in Kenya?

YOU ASKED

We are planning a 11 days bird watching tour to Kenya with allowance of 3 days in either Meru or Samburu. Which of these two parks should we choose for diversity of bird species? Or should we best split the time between them?

ANNE HUYSMAN REPLIES

Choosing between Meru and Samburu national park for birdwatching holiday in Kenya is difficult, because any of the two parks is absolutely worth spending a full birding vacation. With 3 days, the question is on what is your birding objective. If you rush through for numbers and sites visited, then option is to split your time between Meru and Samburu. But if you want detailed and in-depth bird watching, I would recommend take one park and stay there longer. On quality of birding the parks are at par but other on accomodation Samburu has a wider range than Meru. However Meru wins in that it is less crowded and you virtually have the park to your self.
