Paying for college summer educational tour to Africa

YOU ASKED

Our college is arranging an educational tour to Africa in summer 11. They want the students to already commit with a deposit for the tour which is a whole 12 months to go. Is it normal to pay a deposit for a educational tour this early.

ANNE HUYSMAN REPLIES

First I commend your college for arranging educational travel to Africa and I am sure a lot of work has gone into designing of the itinerary and also vetting which operator / outfitter will run the educational tour.

It is safe to assume that your college has the students best interest at heart and when they ask for a deposit in advance it is to make sure that important planning is not left to the last minute. There is tendency with students (as well all types of travelers) to verbally commit to a tour and later pull out - which leaves the organizers as well as other tour participants completely messed up especially if the numbers fall to level that is not economical to run a tour.

Asking for a deposit for educational tour to Africa, means that your college is just being cautious and ensuring that you get the preferred services in the itinerary eg hotels which need to be reserved with a deposit.
