COELIAC WALKING TOUR 2019

10 Days in the game-rich Aberdare region
& Lake Naivasha & Masai Mara

Day 1. Nairobi

Arrival and transfer to the Eka Hotel in Nairobi.

Day 2. Aberdare Country Club

Gluten-free tour: walking with giraffe at the Aberdare Country Club.

A 3 hrs transfer takes you to Nyeri in central Kenya, home of the Kikuyu tribe. You will drive through the main farming areas of Kenya with a lot of coffee and pineapple plantations.

We arrive in time for lunch at the Aberdare Country Club, our base for two nights.

The Club is built on the slopes of the Kamatongu Hill (also know as Mweiga Hill) in a game sanctuary of over 1300 acres (520 hectares). This captivating site was once the homestead of an English couple that decided to settle in Kenya. Almost a half century later, their home was renamed the Aberdare Country Club and opened for guests. Considered a heritage property in Kenya, the Aberdare Country Club has retained the charm of a private home with the simple comforts of a country inn.

The game sanctuary is open savanna with scattered bushes and is home to zebras, reticulated giraffes, antelopes, warthogs, leopards, hyenas and buffaloes. This is where we will do the walk. We have the option to first climb Kamatongu Hill from where you have a good view on the Aberdare Range on one side and Mount Kenya on the other, or to head immediately for the game-rich plains surrounding the Aberdare Country Club.

Day 3. Game Drive in the Solio Ranch. O/N Aberdare Country Club

oryx at the solio ranch

After breakfast we drive to the nearby Solio Ranch. This time we do an extensive game drive in the Rhino sanctuary, which has the world's largest concentration of Black Rhinos. The White Rhino is also found here as well as the Reticulated Giraffe, Leopard, Lion and a wide range of plains game and bird life. We will drive around in the ranch but since this private sanctuary is little visited by the main tour operators, we will not have many cars surrounding us. Transfer to the Aberdare Country Club for a late lunch.

Free afternoon to spend bird watching in the manicured garden or at the heated open-air swimming pool. The Aberdare Country Club also has a 9-hole golf course. The unique thing about this golf course is that you can tee off amidst the wildlife that wanders on the course.

Day 4. Aberdare National Park. O/N The Ark

Today we go with a gluten-free picnic lunch to the nearby Aberdare National Park. We do an extensive game drive and go all the way to the moorlands which have some spectacular water falls, where you can get out of the vehicle and do a short walk.

A highlight on our coeliac tour is the Tree Hotel, where Elephants, Buffaloes, Rhinos and other game come to a floodlit waterhole right below the balcony of the hotel.

Our hotel of choice is The Ark, which is designed for game viewing from various decks. The game viewing is an all-night show and many visitors pass the night time focused on the waterhole where among the species frequenting are elephants, black rhinos, hyenas, various gazelles, warthogs, giant forest hogs, the elusive bongo and with luck a leopard or a lion may pay a visit.

Day 5. Crescent Island walk. O/N Lake Naivasha Country Club

A 4 hour bus transfer takes us to the Rift Valley, where we will stay for 2 nights in the Lake Naivasha Country Club which borders the lake.

In the afternoon we do a game viewing hike at the privately owned Crescent Island, which is a peninsula on the Eastern shore of Lake Naivasha. There is a lot of easy to see game e.g. Masai giraffes, wildebeests, waterbucks, elands, zebras and impalas. It is also a heaven for birds with +200 Kenya birds species recorded. The walk is gentle and satisfying.

Day 6. Boat Ride + Crater Lake. O/N Lake Naivasha Country Club

african fish eagle,lake naivasha

We do an early morning boat ride on Lake Naivasha (about 1 hour) looking out for hippos, the game on the shore of Crescent Island and lots of water birds. The feeding of the colourful African Fish Eagle is a marvelous photo oportunity. But you have to be quick!

After the boat ride we transfer to Crater Lake, where we will first walk in the game sanctuary followed by a trek on the crater rim from where we see the lake from various angles. On the walk look out for giraffes, black and white Colobus monkeys, elands and a range of gazelles. With a bit of luck we might even see some jackals, bat-eared foxes or hartebeests.

Day 7, 8 + 9. Masai Mara. O/N Mara Leisure Camp

We now take a break from walking to put all our attention in African safaris. To see the best of Kenyan wildlife Masai Mara is the place to be. Elephants, rhinos, giraffes, buffaloes, gazelles and all the big cats are found here. So, after breakfast we start our journey passing through Narok Town - a colorful Masai town.

Our game viewing does not actually start at the park gate. We will be able to see many animals along the way grazing side by side with the Masai livestock. We reach the Mara Leisure Camp, our home for the next three days, in time for lunch.

Day 10. Kiambethu tea plantation + to Nairobi for outbound flight

We now head towards the Kiambethu Tea Farm, where we'll be in time for a late lunch.

This is an old colonial home established by the early settlers and the pioneers of tea growing in Kenya. There will be a talk on tea: its arrival in Kenya, the growing, processing and up to when you put it into your cup. A short guided walk in the tea plantation and into a small remaining part of indigenous forest completes the tour.

We have a healthy farm lunch and thereafter transfer to Nairobi for the evening flight out ending a successful gluten free walking tour.
