AFRICAN PHOTO SAFARIS

Photography Vacations

Ontdek Kenya Safaris organizes quality African photo safaris for discerning wildlife photographers who want a detailed photo experience that goes beyond the "aim & shoot" photographic safaris.

In business since 1996, we use our experience in Kenya to select and combine national parks enabling you to have maximum time for quality nature photography with minimal road transfers. Our photo safaris are restricted to Kenya where we live and work, travel a lot, and with a strong conviction we would persuade anyone interested in Africa photo safaris that Kenya is the ultimate destination as photo subjects range from birds, people, culture to scenery and of course wildlife.

WHAT MAKES ONTDEK'S AFRICAN PHOTO SAFARIS UNIQUE:

In the words of Peter Huysman, co-owner of Ontdek Kenya and a nature photographer: I've had great photo moments in the course of guiding the walking, bird watching and wildlife safaris. With our help, we can make that you have as many wonderful memories in your 2 weeks of photo safari in Kenya as I've had in my 20+ years of guiding. This is what Peter wants to share with all his clients:

- Our African photo safaris have quality time in the field giving you the opportunity to shoot and re-shoot for the perfect shot. Our tours are not the rushed photo safaris of Masai Mara -> Amboseli ->> Tsavo ->>> Nakuru ->>>> Tree Hotel. No, our itineraries are slow but detailed so you can observe and record nature: a bird in its flight, animals grooming each other, a cloud cover moving over a mountain and the big cats in Masai Mara.

- We select and combine parks to get a circuit that gives a wide range of subjects and to cut down on exhausting and long road transfers - when comparing Kenya photo safaris, be watchful for itineraries that look attractive based on the many places you will visit as it might mean that most of your day light hours will be spend on transfers and not on quality photography. Yes, the only way of enjoying your photo safari is when you are relaxed.

- We encourage our clients to stay in one location for a minimum of 2-3 nights (and in bigger national parks at least 4) so as to have enough time for thorough photo exploration. This way your tour is relaxed and with productive photography.

- Ontdek's African photo safaris are not all-vehicle-bound affairs in crowded national parks. Our clients appreciate the fact that we include private game conservancies and the small national parks that are full of easy to see game while on walking safaris. Nothing beats the experience of setting up your photo gear in the plains full of giraffes, zebras and gazelles and you shoot to your hearts content away from mass tourism.

- Ontdek's photo safaris are not restricted to the standard safari rule of morning and afternoon game drives. We go for maximum time in the field as defined by you - the client. Yes, we will be out there for the first pictures with the low light of the morning and you will find us enjoying a herd of buffaloes wallowing in mud at 12 noon - the very time that other tourists are idling away in hotel lounges waiting for the 4pm game drive!

- We are proud of our African photo safari guides who are accomplished naturalists with many years of experience in safari and are able to interpret animal behavior, alerting you for the opportunities for perfect photos. They are also patient and handle the long hours of photography with ease mainly because they enjoy being out in nature. Count on them to know how to position the vehicle for the best light and also when to switch off the engine for maximum silence etc. Read more on how we organize our guided tours in Kenya.

- Ontdek's photo safaris are about stress free travel. We are thorough in all that we do - we don't just quote prices - we ask a lot of questions from our potential clients to make sure we fully connect with their needs. We give you candid ground information that goes further than the guide books and when you land in Kenya we execute flawless ground logistics.

- While we don't like to use price as our marketing pitch - because we first and foremost want to be known for quality African photo safaris - it comes as a pleasant surprise to many nature photographers that our direct prices are just a fraction of what one would pay from overseas operators. We run tours even with 2 clients or small groups of friends who have previously traveled together and have already worked out their group dynamics.

In choosing an outfitter for your African photo safari it matters that you pick one who shares your interests and is of course reliable. Ontdek Kenya fits this bill and we invite you to consider traveling with us. We look forward to consulting with you for your African photo safari. Contact Ontdek Kenya Safaris.

African photo safari in Masai Mara

Masai Mara is the Africa that every nature photographer dreams of, with elephants, buffaloes, wildebeests, lions, leopards, cheetahs, topis and hippos as main subjects for photography. To appreciate the riches of Masai Mara and to capture it in your photography work you should stay here for a longer period than the 2-3 nights of the standard safari packages.

There are game-filled open savanna plains, riverine forests, meandering rivers full of crocodiles and hippos, so on your photo safari in Masai Mara, we will keep you in the field long enough to have a good photo session. Read more >>>

African Photo tour in Tsavo and Amboseli NP

On this page we cover Tsavo & Amboseli, relatively close to each other but each with it's own characteristics making your photo subjects wide.

Tsavo National park, the land of the man-eater lions, is more wild and less crowded than Masai Mara, Amboseli or Samburu. Tsavo gives you the surprise of seeing a family of elephants the least expected moment emerging from the bush.

Put quality time in your safari by combining Tsavo with Amboseli at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Not only the big game is available in plenty; the bird life in Amboseli is prolific with +400 species recorded, some relatively easy to see and picture. Read more >>>

Photo safari in the Rift Valley in Kenya

African photography vacations, Crater Lake Kenya

On this page we combine the Rift Valley Lakes of Naivasha and Baringo (the only two fresh water lakes in the Rift Valley), Lake Nakuru and Bogoria, both alkaline lakes. A boat ride on Lake Baringo or Naivasha shows you the landscape, game and bird life from a different angle. Read more >>>

Photo tour in Samburu and Sweetwaters

Why you should consider Samburu as a priority destination in your photo tour.

This photo safari covers the northern Kenyan parks of Samburu and Sweetwaters, which are a sharp contrasts to Masai Mara, Amboseli or Tsavo. Photography in Samburu is not just for the game; the hills and rocky outcrops are very good subjects for outdoor photography.

Sweetwaters is a 24,000 acres private reserve in the Laikipia area and it serves a niche group of travelers. The habitat comprises of extensive savanna grasslands and riverine forests that border the Ewaso Nyiro River. It is home to elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, giraffes as well as other plains game and it has the highest ratio of game-to-area of any national park or reserve in Kenya. Of note is the presence of wild dogs which are now occasionally seen in Sweetwaters. Read more >>>
