10-DAAGSE MOUNT KENYA TREKKING

Start your Mt. Kenya climbing on a high note with guided game viewing walks in Aberdares game sanctuary and Sangare ranch, away from mass tourism. Visit the Solio Ranch which holds the highest concentration of Black Rhinos in Africa.

We use the Sirimon - Naro Moru route for circumnavigation getting scenic and different views of Mount Kenya. The itinerary includes a day for acclimatization. This is a fully supported mountain trek with accommodation in mountain huts. We handle all tour logistics leaving you free to enjoy the climb. For tailor-made tours as well as extensions in Samburu please contact us.

With renown Ontdekís ground logistics, accommodation in select lodges and tented camps, knowledgeable local guides and options of small group or private departures the time is right to book this nature tour.

Day 1: Nairobi

Arrival and transfer to the La Mada or equivalent hotel in Nairobi.

Day 2: Aberdare Game Sanctuary. O/N Sangare Tented Camp

A 3 hrs transfer takes you to Nyeri in central Kenya, home of the Kikuyu tribe. You will drive through the main farming areas of Kenya with a lot of coffee and pineapple plantations. We will make a stop at the open air Karatina market, which is the biggest farm produce market in the region.

We arrive at the Aberdare Country Club in time lunch. In the afternoon we will walk in the Aberdare game sanctuary with opportunities to see warthogs, Thompson and Grant's gazelles, zebras, reticulated giraffes and the biggest antelopes: elands. On their own these animals are a wonder to watch but to do so while you are walking is an experience that has always brought joy to our guests. Warning: kindly reserve your films or memory space! There is a big temptation to take all the pictures on this day but take our word: there will still be other opportunities. Transfer to Sangare Tented Camp for overnight.

A brief on the Sangare Ranch:

Sangare is a 6500 acres private wildlife conservancy sandwiched between the Aberdares and Mt. Kenya. The 12- tent camp overlooks a fresh water lake full of exciting bird life and where game comes to drink. The Sangare Hill forms a magnificent backdrop for the camp.

The ranch whose habitat is savannah with scattered bushes is home to zebras, giraffes, antelopes, warthogs, leopards, hyenas, elephants and buffaloes. Bird life in Sangare is rich with + 300 bird species reordered such as Red-winged Starlings, Greater Blue-eared Starlings, Olive Pigeons, Northern Crombec , Grey Flycatcher, Cardinal Woodpecker. At the lake there is ease to see Red-knobbed Coot, Black Crake, Storks and others.

The tents are spacious and luxurious with four poster beds, unique African furnishing, private verandahs and en suite facilities with flush toilets and shower.

Day 3: Sangare Ranch Walk. O/N Sangare Tented Camp

Leaving the camp on foot we will enter the open grassland by taking a right turn from the lake, where the big herd of the resident Waterbucks, Elands and Bushbucks will make us stop for pictures and just for the sheer beauty of these antelopes that are found in wet areas.

The walk is on a service road (used for game drives) and we move on towards the Sangare hill on relatively flat terrain before we get to the bottom of the hill. From here we use a path in the bush to climb up the hill where we get a one-off view over the whole area. We have a good view of the Sangare camp and the lake, the snow-capped peaks of Mt. Kenya and the Aberdare range. Picnic lunch is at the Sangare Hill.

We then circumnavigate the hill and enter back into the Sangare Ranch. Taking a different road through the ranch we will walk looking for Giraffes, Impalas, Zebras, Warthogs, Thompsonís and Grantís gazelles.

Back to the camp for overnight.

Day 4: Solio Ranch + Naro Moru. O/N Naro Moru River Lodge

After breakfast we drive to the nearby Solio Ranch for an extensive game drive in the Rhino sanctuary, which has the world's largest concentration of Black Rhinos. The White Rhino is also found here as well as the Reticulated Giraffe, Leopard, Lion and a wide range of plains game and bird life. We will drive around in the ranch but since this private sanctuary is little visited by the main tour operators, we will not have many cars surrounding us.

Lunch is at the Naro Moru River Lodge, our base for the Mt. Kenya trek.

Afternoon spent relaxing or walking around the garden and along the river trail in look for colorful assortment of birds which are residents in this area such as African Green Pigeon, a range of Sunbirds e.g. the Tacazze, Bronze and Variable Sunbird, Rufous Chatterer, Chin-spot Batis, Giant Kingfisher, Mountain Wagtail, Turacos, White-headed Wood-Hoopoe, Golden-breasted Bunting, Northern Pied Babblers among others. O/N is in the Naro Moru River Lodge.

Day 5: Beginning Of The Mount Kenya Expedition

At the lodge we connect with our mountain support team. A 2-hour drive takes us to the park gate (2600 m) from where we walk through the rain forest aiming to get to Old Moses Camp (3400m) in the early afternoon. Today's walk allows us to see birds that are only found on high altitude. From Old Moses Camp, which is just above the tree line, we get our first sightings on the peaks.

Overnight is in the mountain hut of Old Moses Camp.

Day 6: To Shiptonís Camp

Through the Mackinderís Valley we walk to the Shiptonís Camp. This walk will take us 6 to 8 hours. For the first time we encounter the lobelias which will be covering most of the ground. All around us will be various streams and the area is at times quite boggy. Picnic is on a scenic spot along the way. Animals are still with us though just represented by the rock hyrax, its pint-size not withstanding, is the closest relative to the elephant. We should reach Shipton's Camp (4236 m) by early afternoon.

Batian, Nelion and Lenana, the three majestic peaks of Mt. Kenya will be clearly visible from here. This is a point from where great panoramic photos can be taken.

Dinner and overnight in the mountain hut of Shiptonís Camp.

Day 7: Acclimatization Day

Walks in preparation for the climbing of Point Lenana. Dinner and overnight are at Shiptonís Hut.

Day 8: Point Lenana (4985 m), The Highest Point Of The Trekking

We start with a light breakfast early in the morning. We then set off for the ultimate of our trip, Point Lenana, which we hope to reach with sunrise. The view from here is truly rewarding as the whole of the area, including the complete Aberdare range can be overviewed.

After a short rest we start the descending along the Lewis glacier to reach Mackinderís Camp (4200 m) for a hearty brunch. In the afternoon we descend further to Met Station (3050m), which is below the tree line, for overnight.

Day 9: To The Park Gate. O/N Naro Moru River Lodge

Walk to the park gate from where vehicles await us for the transfer to the Naro Moru River Lodge for lunch and overnight.
