Kenya family tours: walking in the Menengai Crater

It matters that as a family you are away from mass tourism and to achieve this we use private game conservancies which have a lot of easy to see game and nature is at its best.

This Kenya family tour starts from our home base i.e. the Aberdares/Mt.Kenya region, where over the years we have introduced & guided our clients to the hidden gems in this area: the open savannas of the Sangare ranch teaming up with giraffes, zebras, impalas, Thompson’s and Grant’s gazelles - all yours to discover as you take guided walks in total absence from mass tourism.

The Solio ranch, which holds the highest concentration of Black Rhinos in Africa, is a must visit in this area. Going to the tree hotel will add to the many highlights that you have already enjoyed in this guided walking trip.

Your Kenya family tour then moves on to Sweetwaters and finishes with Samburu reserve in Northern Kenya.

With renowned Ontdek’s ground logistics, competent naturalist guides, accommodation in select lodges and tented camps and options to customize this Kenya family safari to suit your specific need the time is right to book this tour.

Read this when you are planning a family tour with children.

Day 1. Nairobi

Arrival and transfer to the Nairobi Safari Club or equivalent hotel in Nairobi.

Day 2+3. Kenya Family Tour: Sangare Ranch. O/N Sangare Tented camp.

A 3 hrs transfer takes you to the Sangare Ranch in Central Kenya.

A brief on the Sangare Ranch:

Sangare is a 6500 acres private wildlife conservancy sandwiched between the Aberdares and Mt. Kenya. The 12-tent camp overlooks a fresh water lake full of exciting bird life and where game comes to drink. The Sangare Hill forms a magnificent backdrop for the camp.

The ranch whose habitat is open savanna with scattered bushes is home to zebras, giraffes, antelopes, warthogs, leopards, hyenas, elephants and buffaloes. Bird life in Sangare is rich with + 300 bird species recorded such as Red-winged and Greater Blue-eared Starlings, Olive Pigeons, Northern Crombec, Grey Flycatcher, Red-throated Wryneck, Cardinal Woodpecker... At the lake there is the easy to see Red–knobbed Coot, Black Crake, Storks and others. The tents are spacious and luxurious with four poster beds, unique African furnishing, private verandas and en suite facilities with flush toilet and shower.

For the 2 (or 3) days in Sangare the family has a choice of activities - you may opt for vehicle game drives or guided game viewing walks.

The walks are in the open plains where your family will see game such as zebras, gazelles, elands, bushbucks, waterbucks and giraffes.

Your guide will tailor the walking distances to accommodate all the family members, the idea being to ensure that you step out in nature and experience Kenya outside the window view of the safari bus.

Day 4. Safari in the Solio Ranch. O/N Sangare Tented Camp or Treetops in the Aberdares

Kenya family tours: Solio game drive.
After breakfast we drive to the nearby Solio Ranch for an extensive game drive in the Rhino Sanctuary, which has the world's largest concentration of black rhinos. The white rhino is also found here as well as the reticulated giraffe, leopard, lion, cheetah and a wide range of plains game and bird life. We will drive around in the ranch but since this private sanctuary is little visited by the main Kenyan tour operators, we will not have many cars surrounding us. Back to Sangare camp.

If the children are above 7 years, lunch is at the Outspan Hotel in Nyeri, which is also the check in point for Treetops.

Many people who come to the Aberdare National Park expressly visit the tree hotels for game viewing. Their interest is highly justified: to see elephants, buffaloes, rhinos and other game coming to a floodlit waterhole right below the balcony of the hotel is really amazing.

Our hotel of choice is Treetops, which is designed for game viewing on a 3-storey structure standing on stilts. Treetops gets its name from the original hotel in which Princess Elizabeth arrived on Feb 5, 1952 and checked out on Feb 6 as the queen of England after her father, King George died in London during the night.

The game viewing is an all-night show and many visitors pass the time focused on the waterhole where among the species frequenting are elephants, rhinos, hyenas, various gazelles, warthogs, giant forest hogs, the elusive bongo and with luck a leopard or a lion may pay a visit.

Day 5+6. Kenya Family Tour: Sweetwaters Game Conservancy

We leave Sangare and move up north to Sweetwaters a 24,000 acres private reserve in the Laikipia area that serves a niche group of travelers. The habitat comprises of extensive savanna grasslands and riverine forests that border the Ewaso Nyiro River.

It is is home to elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, giraffes as well as other plains game and it has the highest ratio of game-to-area of any national park or reserve in Kenya. Of note is the presence of wild dogs which are now occasionally seen in Sweetwaters.

Being a private conservancy, conservation is given high priority and the number of visitors is deliberately kept small by having an exclusive tented camp. All tents are set by the floodlit waterhole where game comes to drink & lick salt.

Within Sweetwaters there is a 200-acre Chimpanzee sanctuary set up where orphaned and rescued chimps are reared and rehabilitated to once again fit in the wilderness.

Your family tour stays in Sweetwaters for 2 nights.

Day 7,8+9. Kenya Family Tour: Samburu. O/N Simba Lodge

The grand finale in this family safari is Samburu which will take the last 3 days of the tour. Situated in the dry northern Kenya with 3 game reserves: the main Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba. Note that Samburu and Buffalo Springs are separated just by a bridge and Shaba is cut off from the other two by a road.

Samburu's lifeline is the Ewaso Nyiro, strong and overflowing with the rains and at times of drought it can be reduced to a dry sand bed. The general landscape is dry open grasslands, scattered hills but lush vegetation along the river – and this is where most game is concentrated. There are huge herds of elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, elands and various gazelles. Of note is the occurrence of a unique northern species: the gerenuk, a long-neck gazelle that feeds standing on its back legs and also the unmistakable Grevy’s zebras.

Big cats abound in plenty and it is possible to see lions, cheetahs and leopards. The combined parks are home to a recorded + 360 species of Kenyan birds.

For families traveling with children we recommend minimum 3 nights at Samburu. Consider this is a hot place and your outdoor activities will be for early morning or late afternoon.

In any of the lodges that you will stay, they possibly will put a bit (a chunk of meat) for the leopard and the crocodiles to come and eat in the evening. Ok – you know this is not a natural thing but it can be a good subject for your children to watch.

Day 10. Kenya Family Tour: Flight Samburu - Nairobi

To cut the long drive, we recommend that you take the domestic flight Samburu - Nairobi. A day room is reserved for you. Evening flight out from Nairobi.

Itinerary changes on your Kenya family holiday may be made due to local conditions beyond our control.

Our attractive price based on the size & composition of your family includes all accommodation as per itinerary, all meals from breakfast of day 2 through lunch of day 10, all transport Nairobi-Nairobi, domestic flight from Samburu to Nairobi and airport transfers, bottled water during the walks, services of guides, the park entrance fees and a Flying Doctors Evacuation cover.
